Originally, George Fenton, who had worked with Jordan on earlier films such as We’re No Angels, High Spirits and The Company of Wolves, was set to score the film, and was only replaced with Goldenthal a few weeks prior to the film’s opening by producer David Geffen, against Jordan’s wishes. Interestingly, Elliot Goldenthal was not Neil Jordan’s first choice composer for the project. The album was nominated for the Academy Award and the Golden Globe Award for Best Original Score, losing on both counts to the score of The Lion King. The classical style helps to coveys the dark emotional struggles of the characters. The music is characterized by its full, dramatic sound that complements the film's gothic atmosphere.
